Kabaddi World Cup 2016 schedule announced; Shri Vijay Goel unveils official logo
Hon'ble Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Shri Vijay Goel unveiled the official logo of the Kabaddi World Cup 2016 at a press conference in New Delhi on Wednesday. Mr JS Gehlot, President, International Kabaddi Federation (IKF) was also present at the event alongside Goel.

Joining the dais with the duo were eminent sports expert and commentator Charu Sharma and Captain of Indian Kabaddi team, Anup Kumar. Apart from hosts India, eleven other countries are participating in the event. The participating countries are: USA, Thailand, UK, Australia, Iran, Poland, Argentina, Bangladesh, South Korea, Kenya and Japan.

This year's Kabaddi World Cup will the biggest ever with representation from all five Olympic geographies. All matches will be held at The Arena, a state-of-the-art stadium constructed by TransIndia.

The format of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup which kicks off in Ahmadabad from October 7 is such that all 12 teams have been divided into 2 pools of 6 teams each. The fifteen-day tournament will be played in a round robin league format, followed by the semi-finals on October 21 and the final on October 22.

While unveiling the official logo at the event, Shri Vijay Goel said, "India is making significant strides towards utilizing its potential in becoming a global sporting powerhouse. We had 2016 T20 World Cup in March and organised successfully South Asian Games in February 2016. We are holding BRICS Football in October 2016 & FIFA under- 17 in 2017. And now, 2016 Kabaddi World Cup, yet another event of an international stature and scale. It is the perfect time to highlight the giant leaps that kabaddi has taken over the past few years to propel the sport on the path of global recognition."

He also added, "I am extremely happy to see kabaddi going global across Olympic geographies through the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup."

The logo of the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup has been derived from the natural heritage of Gujarat. The logo depicting an Asiatic lion symbolises the ferocity of a raider and the agility of a defender at the same time. Moreover, the lion has been considered a symbol of bravery for thousands of years. The Gir region in Gujarat is home to the famous Asiatic lion.

Ticket sales for the Kabaddi World Cup 2016 have already started and are available on Star Sports is the official broadcaster of the event and all matches will be telecast live on Star Sports Network and the Hotstar app.
