How video games are expanding the music industry?
Major film composers are now creating the scores to video games and everyone is benefiting.

Musicians and the music industry in general have experienced a devastating past decade or two. True to form, these artists and professionals have persevered in pursuing their craft because of the passion it inspires in themselves and others. Non-musicians may not be aware of it but the video game industry has made an incredible impact on these artists and their ability to endeavour in their pursuits. Only a few decades ago the gaming industry was written off as superficial and yet it has become the current leader in many creative innovations that have crossed over into use in film and TV. The same celebrated and respected professionals that work on many of your favorite recordings, movies, and shows are also behind the sights and sounds of these games.

NetEase is a global leader in online and mobile gaming. Based in China with offices in the US, NetEase has presented and adapted their highly successful games for the Western market. Not only does this offer entertainment to the public, it also facilitates collaboration amongst the creative elite from both countries. In particular, the score which accompany these games is often done by the same professionals who are acclaimed the world over. NetEase offerings such as RevelationWildfire, and Imperial Reign exhibit these traits. As the Music Producer & Music Supervisor for these titles, Fei Yu of NetEase worked with award-winning composer Neal Acree and Gary Haab to manifest the perfect cinematic complement to the storylines. Fei’s incredible ability to match composers with these productions created the perfect complement of sonic texture to these games.

Music can often be about creating a bridge that offers immersion in a story whether it be a film or a video game. Fei had heard Los Angeles based Acree’s work on Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria and appreciated the authenticity in his use of Chinese music in the score. She approached him about working on Revelation and Imperial Reign. Fei describes, “I wanted a big, strong sound like that of World of Warcraft but I definitely wanted it Eastern sounding in regards to style.” The resulting sonic identity created by Acree was so impressive that Fei also used the composer for Wildfire, directly referencing his symbiotic use of orchestral and electronic music influences. The composer notes, “Creating and recording this music was a truly international effort. Fei Yu’s expertise and work in particular was essential to facilitating this. Over a three-year period we collaborated on four of NetEase’s most successful and anticipated games, including Mist World, Revelation Online, Imperial Reign, and Wildfire. These sessions involved recording musicians in Los Angeles and Seattle, culminating in a live performance recently produced in China with Fei’s assistance as Sound Engineer, where I conducted music from Revelation Online at the Beijing Aquatic Stadium.

These games and the music created for them have attained award-winning status including: 2015 Scorecast Genius Choice Vote Award for "Best Music, Game: Revelation", 2015 CGDA Best Game Music Awards for “Imperial Reign”, 2016 Bsospirit Jerry Goldsmith Award for "Best Music, Video Game: Revelation Online", 2016 Mmosite Readers Choice Award for "Best Soundtrack: Revelation" and the 2016 Global Music Award for Outstanding Achievement. In the same way that music fans and movie fans have found a Venn Diagram in the work of soundtracks of films like Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and others, the modern incarnation of this is skewing towards the music of video games. There are generations of gamers who have a shared experience of this music in their childhood and adult lives. Fei Yu and NetEase are among the entities shaping the direction of this music and are doing so with the respect of their predecessors and peers.

Grammy award-winning recording engineer and mixer John Kurlander states, “Having worked with icons like Elton John, Toto, Ozzy Osbourne, Michael Jackson, and Paul McCartney, in addition to orchestras such as the London Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic, just to name a few; I feel that I have keen insight into greatness in the music world. Ms. Yu is her generation’s representative of what myself and my peers did for ours. Her talents as a music producer know no bounds. I’m incredibly excited to see what Fei, the composers she works with, and this new medium for creating music will offer up to this and future generations of music lovers.”
