Google celebrates Big Bang theorist Georges Lemaitre's 124th birthday with an animated doodle
The internet search engine and technology giant Google celebrates Belgian astronomer Georges Lemaitre's 124th Birthday, who had propounded that the Big Bang theory was responsible for the origin of the universe, with a simple animated doodle.
"Todays
animated Doodle depicts Lemaitre within the constantly expanding
universe that he first envisioned, surrounded by galaxies expanding
outward just as he said they would," writes Google on its
website.
Georges
Henri Joseph Edouard Lemaitre (1894-19660) a Belgian Catholic
priest, astronomer and professor of physics at the Catholic
University of Leuven is known for his theories of 'Exanding
Universe' and 'Big Bang'. However, Hubbles name is more often
associated with the Big Bang since his extensive work led to new
topic area in physics called 'relativistic cosmology'.
"Most
people have heard of the Big Bang theory, but fewer recognize the
name Georges Lemaitre, the man who came up with the hypothesis that
transformed our understanding of astrophysics. Born on this day in
1894, Lemaitre was a Belgian Catholic priest who proposed that the
universe began as a single primordial atom, which he referred to as
the 'Cosmic Egg'," informs the website.
Lemaitres
1927 paper theorising that the universe was expanding was soon
substantiated by Edwin Hubbles observations, which were published
in 1929, it adds.
