Another teenage girl of Haryana's Sports School in Rai allegedly attempts suicide
Close on the heels of a girl of Haryana'a Motilal Nehru School of Sports at Rai in Sonipat district committing suicide about two-three months back, the shocking news of another alleged suicide attempt by a teenage girl living in the school's hostel has shocked the former students of the school called Ex-Raists.

The news clipping of the alleged suicide was posted on the Facebook page of Ex-Raist Association (ERA) that has been contributing towards the upliftment of their alma mater. The girl this time consumed the All-Out mosquito repellent and was rushed to the civil hospital in Sonipat and to the relief of everyone, the girl has survived. Hopefully, this time, the reason or the root cause of the attempted suicide could come to the fore.

In the earlier case, no suicide note was left behind by the deceased and the police investigation led to no conclusion. However, the parents of the deceased then had pointed out that their daughter was victim of impropriety of psycho-social environment in the school.

Once again, the girls living in the hostel of this well resourced institution that has enjoyed a great prestige in India are emotionally upset. Earlier, the school was closed for a few days after the girl had allegedly committed suicide.

The Ex-Raists, on their Facebook page have written the comments like: "What's happening in my school?"; "Something is wrong with the management"; and "The school has gone to dogs," indicative of their concern for the school.

However, one of them wrote, "Please do not speak bad of the school," thereby indicating that there is a need for positive and optimistic attitude and pushing for school reforms.

Not only in this school, a spate of suicides by girls in their teens, has been witnessed in the last few months in other schools in and around Delhi. This is a great cause of worry and there is a need to reflect and correct the both the academic and psycho-social environment of schools so that children come to school for the joy of learning and acquire life skills to understand their potentials and the school  dons the role to help them in realising their potentials.

I would suggest that the ERA members must take the initiative to request the school management and staff for a review discussion and freshly envision the school practices to embark on the journey of from ‘being good’ to ‘getting great’.
